The two airlines announced the deal on Thursday morning, just hours after Spirit had canceled plans.
Spirit did not have the support of shareholders to gain acceptance for its Frontier merger the first time.
If it is approved by regulators, JetBlue's purchase of Spirit could make Frontier as the biggest discount airline.
