He also stated the team was reportedly concerned when he asked for an additional opinion on his recovery.
Smith told the reporter that he hurt his back while lifting weights heading into the training camp in summer.
Smith missed the bulk of camp, but played in the season opener, making the decision to undergo surgery shortly afterward.
The Packers released Smith during the offseason of this year as a way to save them $15.75 million from the salary cap.
